Night shots

Well having received my remote shutter release and thus having the ability to do some long exposures, I ventured out in the middle of the night to have a little practice.
Apart from getting interrupted by the Military Police, ha! I think it went quite well, baring in mind I was shooting in complete darkness. My exposures were around a minute and a half, which was just about long enough for me to run around using a hand held flash gun that I fired at different angles and distances from the subject. I used the flash to highlight various bits of the background too, to make it a little more interesting.

These were the best two images from the shoot, though theres room for improvement. I quite like the way that the sky has gone orangey with the light pollution as i think it compliments the red, though I dont know if I can change that somehow to make it less orange for other shoots which I may want a darker black sky? Also I might try some slightly more interesting angles etc,

I know they might not be to everyone's taste, but i'd appreciate some feedback on what people think and improvements etc..

ta,

  1. Its a good start, and i do like the red in the background, but i think it then makes the picture too red, and you loose the impact of the car to the background.
You just need to work out a way to light the car that doesn't involve you running around so much, and is a bit more focused then just a little flash gun. But thats going to be difficult without using lots of lights!
Next time try more white card i think

  2. Well as i mentioned earlier, i really like these shots and love the colour of the sky. I personally think that on the second one it would look a bit better if the yellow lines were not there - but can easily be removed with your excellent photoshop skills! :) and also the railing on the side but not so easy to get rid of. With the first image i like how it stands out more from the background, and the highlight underneath! Maybe just try and experiment a bit more with larger flash and bigger reflectors. Great stuff Robert!!

  3. Running around at night flashing - Johnny would be proud!
These have a very eerie feel. I think I prefer the second as the lighting is more even and I think the sky is more subtle. I love the colours. I think you're right to be thinking of going darker on the sky - I think it will make it richer.

  4. Youve obviously shown great dedication to this project running around with a flashgun! I agree with all the other comments and think that youve made a brill start to the project. The red of the car looks nice and shiny :)
